CREAT has been involved in the right to information movement since 2002 when the Karnataka RTI Act was passed. Later on the campaign was extended to the whole of Karnataka when the central RTI Act was passed in 2005 CREAT. RTI related activities gained strength and recognition when CREAT entered into collaboration with Commonwealth Human Rights Initiative [CHRI], New Delhi. For five, years CREAT and CHRI organised several workshops, seminars, training programs to promote RTI among the citizens. A large number of books, guides, case studies, posters were also published. CREAT-CHRI has also promoted a state level network of RTI activists and researchers.
CREAT has also been involved in assisting the Government for effective implementation of the RTI Act. The members of CREAT and its RTI network have trained over 10000 public information officers and have been invited by reputed training institutes for delivering lectures, conducting workshops etc. CREAT has also filed a number of RTI applications and conducted evaluation studies.
